Much more than touchThe body listens before the skinLearning to slow downAn encounter before a treatmentTo touch is to meetA philosophy I pass onThere is a moment few people notice. A suspended instant, just before the hands meet the body. Only a few seconds.
The practitioner breathes. The person settles in. Silence gently enters the room.
Nothing is happening yet. And yet… the massage has already begun.
We have often learned to think of massage as a succession of movements. A technique, a protocol, a sequence of movements designed to relax the muscles or relieve tension.
Of course, technique is important. It is an essential foundation. But over the years, I have discovered that it is only part of what makes a good treatment.
Because what a person receives does not depend only on what the hands do.
It also depends on how they are inhabited.
Much more than touch
When we are welcomed gently, something in us already relaxes.
A sincere smile. A calm voice. A caring look. An available presence.
Even before the first movement, our nervous system begins to assess the environment.
Is it safe? Can I lower my guard? Can I set down what I am carrying today?
These questions are not consciously formulated. They are perceived by our body, which constantly analyses its surroundings.
When it feels safe, the breath becomes fuller, the shoulders drop, the muscles gradually begin to release their tension.
The massage often begins at that very instant.
The body listens before the skin
We sometimes think touch works only because it stimulates the muscles or tissues. In reality, the body receives much more.
It perceives slowness. The quality of attention. The rhythm. The practitioner’s breathing. The intention that accompanies each movement.
Two people can reproduce exactly the same protocol. Yet the experience will be completely different.
Why? Because the body does not only receive a movement. It receives a presence. It is this presence that gives touch its depth.
Learning to slow down
Our daily life constantly pushes us to do. Do more. Do fast. Do well. Massage offers exactly the opposite. It invites us to be. When the practitioner slows down, something changes.
They no longer try to string techniques together. They begin to listen. The hands become more available. The breath finds its natural rhythm again. Silence stops being a void. It becomes a space of encounter.
This slowing down is not a waste of time. It allows the body to regain trust. And when trust appears, defences can finally settle.
An encounter before a treatment
Each person arrives with their story. Their joys. Their tiredness.
Their sometimes invisible wounds. Massage does not need to know everything. But it can welcome all of it. Without judgement. Without trying to repair immediately. Simply by being present.
I deeply believe that the most beautiful gift a practitioner can offer is not wanting to transform someone.
It is being available enough to allow them to find, by themselves, a path towards their own balance.
Massage then becomes a silent dialogue. The hands propose. The body responds. And little by little, trust sets in.
To touch is to meet
I like to think that touch is a language. A language without words. It does not seek to convince. It does not seek to explain.
It simply creates a space where a person can set down, for a moment, what they no longer need to carry alone.
Perhaps that, in the end, is true massage. Not a succession of techniques. But a deeply human encounter.
An encounter in which the hands become the extension of an attentive presence. And in which the body gradually finds the path to its own calm.
A philosophy I pass on
It is this vision of touch that guides each of my sessions. And it is also the one I pass on during my energy massage course.
Of course, participants learn a complete protocol, essential anatomy, the basics of energy perception and the different energy networks.
But beyond this learning, I wish to pass on something more precious still: a way of being with others. Because while technique can be learned in a few days, quality of presence is cultivated over a lifetime.
And perhaps it is what turns a simple massage into a true encounter.
