The two terms are often confused, even though they answer profoundly different intentions.
Sensuality belongs to life itself
First of all, it is important to remember that sensuality is not sexuality.
Being sensual means being fully connected to your senses. Feeling the warmth of a hand on the skin, the softness of an oil, a subtle scent, a breath that deepens or a sense of presence throughout the body.
Sensuality is a quality of attention and perception.
In a massage, it can emerge naturally as the body relaxes, tension releases and sensations become more vivid.
This does not mean the massage has a sexual intention.
Intention makes all the difference
The main aim of a sexual massage is to provoke sexual arousal or stimulation.
By contrast, a sensual massage aims to encourage presence, relaxation, the flow of energy and reconnection with the body.
Attention is not directed towards seeking a result or sexual gratification, but towards the overall experience lived by the person.
Touch then becomes a way of inhabiting your body more fully, listening to its messages and finding a sense of inner unity.
The body is a space of energy
In certain traditions, particularly tantric ones, the body is considered a living space through which different forms of energy flow.
These practices invite us to welcome all dimensions of the human being: physical, emotional, energetic and spiritual.
When the body relaxes deeply, certain sensations may become more intense. Warmth, shivers, emotions, a feeling of the heart opening or a new vitality may emerge.
These manifestations are natural.
They often reflect an energy that is moving again after being contained or blocked for a long time.
Tantra, Kundalini and vital energy
Tantra and work around kundalini are often reduced to their sexual dimension. Yet their scope is much broader.
In their essence, these approaches seek to awaken consciousness, develop presence and encourage a freer flow of vital energy throughout the body.
This energy is sometimes called sexual energy because it has its source in the same energy centres as those linked to creation and vitality.
But it is not limited to sexuality.
When it flows freely, it can nourish creativity, the drive to live, intuition, self-confidence, the capacity to love or the sense of connection with oneself.
Energy work can therefore be deeply sensual, intense and transformative without ever being sexual.
A clear and respectful framework
In the treatments I offer, the framework is essential.
Touch is always guided by respect, listening and presence. The intention is never to provoke or sustain sexual arousal, but to accompany the person in an experience of relaxation, reconnection and inner exploration.
Sensuality may be present because it is naturally part of the human experience.
Sexuality belongs to another space, another intention and another framework.
Learning to feel again
Our society sometimes tends to sexualise any form of sensuality or conscious touch.
Yet there is an immense space between the absence of contact and sexuality.
It is in this space that massage finds all its richness.
A space where it becomes possible to feel fully, to slow down, to surrender to the present moment and to find a deeper connection with your body.
Without expectation. Without goal. Simply present to what is.
As a practitioner, I see sensuality as a door to a deeper presence to oneself. When it is welcomed within a clear, respectful and conscious framework, it becomes a path of reconnection rather than a search for stimulation.
