First there is silence. Then a first note rises, long and round, seeming never to want to end. You do not only hear it with your ears: you feel it in your chest, in your belly, right down to your bones. The sound bath begins there, in that instant when sound stops being noise and becomes a space in which you can rest.

What is a sound bath?

A sound bath is a relaxation session in which you let yourself be carried by the frequencies. You lie down, comfortably settled, eyes closed. Around you, instruments resonate and envelop you. There is nothing to do, nothing to achieve. Just to receive.

We speak of a “bath” because that is exactly the feeling: being immersed in sound as you are in water. The vibrations do not stay on the surface, they pass through the body and rock it.

Sound, a very ancient medicine

Long before words, there was sound. Traditions all over the world have used it to pray, to soothe, to accompany life’s passages: the chanting of monks, the beat of the shamanic drum, the bowls of the Himalayas. All share the same intuition: everything alive vibrates, and sound can help us find our own harmony again.

Without going into learned explanations, anyone can experience it. A lullaby calms a child. The sound of the waves slows the breath. Some sounds make us tense, others help us relax. The sound bath starts from this simple fact and turns it into a true time of care.

The instruments of the journey

Each session brings together several instruments, chosen intuitively according to what I feel when you arrive:

  • Tibetan bowls, whose harmonics linger and seem to fill the whole room;
  • the drum, deep, grounding and recalling the rhythm of the heart;
  • the flute, lighter, opening up the space;
  • the guitar, for soft, enveloping layers of sound;
  • koshi chimes, wind chimes whose every note evokes an element: earth, water, air, fire;
  • and others, depending on the inspiration of the moment.

There is no score written in advance. The journey is composed live, listening to the people present.

How a session unfolds

The sound bath lasts 60 minutes and can be experienced alone, as a pair or as a three, at the Centre Ananda in Cannes.

We begin with a conversation, over a hot drink, about how you are feeling and what you would like to set down. Then you settle in, lying down, covered if you wish. The breath slows, the body grows heavier, and the first sounds arrive.

During the journey, I move around you. Some instruments play at a distance, others very close, sometimes above the body so that the vibration can be felt physically. The intensity varies: very gentle, almost silent moments, and others that are fuller.

At the end, the sound gradually withdraws. I let you come back at your own pace, feel the weight of your body, gently move your hands and feet. Then we take time to talk about what you experienced, if you wish.

What you feel

Every sound bath is unique, and everyone experiences it in their own way. Many describe a feeling of floating, as if the body were becoming lighter, almost without outline. Others speak of an inner journey: images, colours, memories rising up. Sometimes an emotion arises and simply passes. Sometimes there is nothing but a deep silence, the silence we often look for without managing to find it.

It also happens that people fall asleep. That is not a failure: the body takes what it needs.

What matters is that there is no good or bad experience. Sound works without our needing to understand it.

Alone, as a pair or as a three

Experiencing a sound bath alone means giving yourself a space entirely devoted to you. As a pair or a three, the experience becomes a shared moment: a couple, two friends, a mother and her daughter. Everyone goes on their own journey, and yet something is woven in the room. The session is then built for everyone present.

Who is it for?

The sound bath is for anyone who feels the need to slow down, to quieten an overly busy mind, to go through a period of change or simply to do themselves good. No meditation experience is needed. You just have to agree to let yourself be carried.

It is a wellbeing treatment: it does not replace medical care. If in doubt, particularly during pregnancy or if you have an implanted electronic device, talk about it before the session.

Letting yourself be tuned

We spend our days bombarded by sounds that agitate us: notifications, traffic, conversations. The sound bath reverses the movement. For one hour, sound no longer asks anything of you. It tunes you, as one tunes an instrument, so that you can vibrate true again.
